The poem arrived early. I blogged it late:
It seems like only yesterday,
(I say this fully knowing)
you changed from baby into boy
your job's to just keep growing!
And grown you have
in words and tasks,
all manner of reflection,
your answers, quick
and to the point
in case there was a question.
One answer I especially like
...it's short, direct and neat,
What topping on your veggie burger?
Simple: You say "meat."
But I will say my
favorite quote
from this year (maybe ever)
I won't forget it yesterday
I will forget it never,
was your description of the night
(and possibly the weather)...
You looked outside
and captured in
a careless phrase, yet rare;
"Gosh" you said, and we were led
to poetry, to air...
"It's 60 lbs. of dark" (not six or seventy)
"out there!"
A year ago a photograph
for all the world to see,
you sat an hour and played some games
and pooped into the potty.
Your definitions are the best
I'll quote you if I may,
Zombie? It is "something
that wears (pa)jamas every day."
(I know instead of "every" you said "all"
but what the hey,
it's called poetic license,
it's a small fee we must pay.)
Self confidence is evident
"I'm smart" and off you run
to climb up trees
or float some leaves
or have some Lego fun.
This year you raced through hayfields,
won some tickets
to a Reds game,
paraded round the diamond
(Rainbow Dash in one of your names.)
And still you love the animals,
You'd build a Rainbow Zoo!
(For Perry the Platypus,
and Ninja Turtles too!)
Oh dear another quote
another one that's overdue:
"YOU NEVER LET ME
DO A FUN THING
THAT I WANT TO DO!"
(Again, a bit of license
what's a NeeNee spozed to do?)
You flew to California,
got a crush on little Grace
(and who could blame you for that choice
that little angel face?)
Oh. You thought it was a secret?
Well I don't know what to say
except that telling Mamma anything
is sure to find its way
into a BlogSpot or an email,
it just seems to make her day.
But truthfully, I must confess
it makes my day as well,
so keep on doing cute stuff
and your Mamma's sure to tell;
like all about
how you eat fast
like Dash and also Daddy
and smorgasbords are not your favorite food
(in fact their baddy...)
And while we're on the subject
you have learned a lot this year
about tummies, toast and little sips
and throw up bowls quite near,
just in case, well you know
I don't think I have to say it;
isn't sick an awful thing
don't you absolutely hate it?
You play hide and seek
in grocery stores,
your family is your muse...
Rainbow? It's your color
cause it catches all the hues
which is kind of like
someone I know,
someone we all love dearly;
a little boy named Ewan on a path
he can see clearly:
A scientist and artist,
an architect of zoos,
he shows us all his handiwork
and leaves a bunch of clues...
a drawing here, an insect there
an animal collection...
And also should you need it
he will offer you correction.
At dinnertime for instance
where an interruption's banned,
a small reminder: "Daddy,
you can also raise your hand."
This year you've grown so quickly
there's a lot I want to say,
(I love how you saw heaven
and proclaimed "it's far away...")
And how you made your Mamma choose
a kiss now or one later;
"no you can't have both" of them
(oh don't grow up to be a waiter!)
But what I loved especially
was your pushing for a CHOICE
because it means you know your worth
it means you clearly claim your VOICE!
(Which is,
granted not a worry
just reread these birthday lines;
it's that some of us are
chronic symptom seekers
sniffing signs...)
It's said of you
(I won't tell who)
you need a size 8 helmet
and my response to that is, well
who cares and so what of it?
You need it for that gorgeous hair!
For your amazing eyes!
You need it for your smarty brain,
You need it to be five!
And we can't wait
to see what's next,
we're sure it won't be boring,
it never was at two or three
and certainly not fouring!
You are our Ewan,
little boy outdoorsy to the core,
at five we'll try to catch you
you'll outrun us, you will soar!
And yes (though it's impossible)
We'll love you even more.
bigloves,
NeeNee
